What are peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. They are essentially smaller versions of proteins - typically between 2 and around 50 amino acids long. Their compact size allows them to bind highly selectively to specific receptors, which makes them valuable tools in scientific research.
Peptides vs. proteins
The distinction between peptides and proteins is mostly one of length and complexity. Proteins are longer chains that fold into intricate three-dimensional structures, while peptides are shorter, simpler, more soluble and easier to synthesise for laboratory work.
How are peptides made?
In the lab, peptides are typically produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). Amino acids are added one by one to a growing chain anchored to a solid support. The finished peptide is purified with HPLC and analysed by mass spectrometry to confirm its purity and identity.
The role of research peptides
Research peptides are used worldwide in preclinical studies to explore biological processes: receptor binding, cellular growth, tissue repair, metabolic regulation and more. Well-studied examples include BPC-157 (tissue repair), TB-500 (regeneration), GHK-Cu (collagen synthesis) and Melanotan-2 (melanocortin receptor studies).
Storage and handling
Lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptides remain stable for years at -20 to -80 °C in airtight, dark packaging. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, dissolved peptides must be kept refrigerated between 2 and 8 °C to prevent degradation.
